Working on my Thesis
i have decided to research on internet and network security
i want to research stories that have impacted large companies and find out what went wrong
as far my thesis goes, i'm not sure what it will consist of yet...but this is what i plan to research and look at to try and find a thesis:
- scholarly journals about network security
- conferences about network security
- news articles about corporations and network security scandals
another topic that has some to do with the internet and security is pirating. i grew up sharing music and watched the rise/fall of napster and how sharing music has led to sharing software, movies, and much more. recently there has been court hearings concerning such matters and websites have been taken directly off the world wide web.

This will probably sound similar to the comment I left you at the bottom of your paper on Monday, but I would suggest seeing if WikiLeaks somehow fits into your "internet security" idea. They've been at the center of a number of stories impacting large companies (hello, they target governments) and they use the Internet as a way to spread that information. I'm not a WikiLeaks expert, but from what i understand they are unique in the sense that they has 0 filter when it comes to releasing information. If they procure some of their documents by hacking websites then you could at least explore the security aspects of that and point out the repercussions for having information so readily available online. Either way it could be a good example of what happens when networks aren't secure or why having all information over the Internet isn't a big deal and security only gets in the way of freely sharing information. Maybe you would want to argue that websites where you watch basketball games shouldn't be so controlled and websites with important/confidential national or political information should have better network security to protect themselves against organizations like WikiLeaks http://wikileaks.ch/
ReplyDeleteI really think the pirating subject would be very interesting to take on. This is a problem that there is no easy solution to. It would be cool if you could come up with a practical solution for record companies or bands so that consumers do not have to pay huge amounts of money for music etc, but they could not steal the products. I am aware of bands who have their own labels and allow you to download their music for free. The ask for donations on their site or they make a limited amount of music free and sell the rest. You cound do some research on torrent file sharing as well and the legality behind that. Network security is interesting too and any of us who will have businesses will be interested in that topic.
ReplyDeleteI really like the idea of your project, I am particularly interested in learning what you find out about illegal song downloading (how people get caught? what the actual laws on it are? etc) I think it'd be interesting if you focused on one specific aspect of internet security and used examples of real people to show how the system needs to be fixed. Here are a couple examples I found of people who were punished for illegal song downloading. Hope this helpful in some way.
